Reading Response: “Why the Clean Water Act Means so Much”

This article focused on the possible negative effects that could happen to American lakes known for their drinking water in regards to the cutbacks on the Clean Water Acts. These acts were administered by the Obama administration but the cut backs are coming from the Trump administration. Thanks to the Clean Water Act lakes like Lake Erie have been able to provide safe drinking water for American citizens. Without this act, people fear that the lake will go back to the polluted state it was previously at back in the early 2000’s.

The article continually refers to the past with the state of many lakes in the early 2000’s and how they were unsafe for swimming and how they could provide drinking water that could be safely consumed by anyone without risk of some kind of disease or other harmful side effects being transferred. The articles mainly focuses on Lake Erie due to the authors history and proximity to the lake. He goes into detail about what the cut backs to the Clean Water act will do, specifically about how a recent cutback means that the government has no obligation to clean the lake if an oil spill or some other form of bio hazard happens within the lake.

A question I ask in regards to this article is why the cutbacks towards the Clean Water Act are even happening. Did they cost the government too much money, was it seen as not important, or did Trump get rid of it because Obama set it up. The article could have included that information for clarity, and also talked about a few other lakes. He did mention some northeastern lakes in the US but he did not go into great detail nor did her reference any other lakes in America.
